The Risks of AI for Kids and Teens

A brief overview for parents and teachers

The dangers that AI poses for children and teens have become clearer as the use of this technology grows. Especially among younger generations, these tools are being used for things like advice, emotional support, and friendship. Companion AI, a type of AI where chatbots or virtual characters are designed for the express purpose of mimicking human relationships, provides a perceived safe space for many teens. They can ask embarrassing questions and speak frankly with no fear of judgment or push back.

But that perceived safety is deceptive. These tools can be highly addictive, and there have been cases where children have become dependent on or overly attached to AI chatbots, which can confuse reality for kids. Some AI tools have proven to be incredibly harmful for young people, who may not have the skills or emotional development to use those tools responsibly. Studies have shown that AI companions may reinforce negative thoughts and dangerous behaviors or offer advice that is not in the best interest of the user and, in some cases, have led to tragic consequences.

For last few years, I’ve been talking about the risks of AI chatbots like Replika and ChatGPT with my family and friends. The more conversations I had, the clearer it became that information about the potential risks of these AI tools wasn’t making its way to parents.

As a show of support, I offer free speaking and advisory services to parents, teachers, administrators, and support organizations. These are designed to help adults understand the potential risks that kids and teens may encounter when using AI, where they might find these tools, and the practical steps that you can take to keep your kids safer if and when they use AI.

I also have a written resource guide available for reference and for additional details on how you can encourage responsible AI use. Both the in-person session and the additional resource guide cover the following information:

-          The basics of companion AI

-          Companion AI in social media and games

-          The potential risks of these tools

-          Warning signs of unhealthy AI use

-          Steps you can take to keep your kids safer

-          Questions to ask your kids

-          Specific companion AI apps and sites to be aware of

If you have a group or organization that might benefit from this information, please feel free to use and share the guide linked below. If you would like me to speak to your group or organization or if you’d like to set up a brief conversation on the topic, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for taking good care of the next generation, and I hope this helps!
